There’s a National Coffee Day, National Nail Polish Day and even National Donut Day. So why not have a day dedicated to our health and well being? That’s exactly what Belgin Aksoy Berkin, owner of Richmond Nua Wellness-Spa, created in Turkey back in 2012. Now officially celebrated in 100 countries and 5000 locations on the second Saturday in June, Global Wellness Day is dedicated to living a healthier and better life. It’s a day to focus on creating healthy habits, reducing stress, and connecting with yourself and loved ones.
Most of us lead frantic lives, running from work to home, trying to balance our responsibilities with our businesses and our families. We put ourselves last, promising to take a break as soon as we close the big deal, as soon as we launch the next project, as soon as we… All of this increased stress can lead to physical ailments-obesity, hypertension, sleep disorders, and so much more.

We need to redefine success. We need to re-evaluate what we’re willing to give up in terms of our health and our connection to our families and communities to achieve it. Is compromising quality of life worth the extra gain in “fame and fortune”?
With the boon in wellness programs and initiatives (the global wellness industry is a $3.7 Trillion market per the Global Wellness Institute), even corporations are realizing the importance of keeping employees healthy and happy. Wellness is more than just bringing in yoga instructors at lunch time or offering a stipend to the local gym. Wellness is about supporting your teams in regaining their physical and mental health. It’s about providing opportunities and giving permission to disconnect and create some semblance of balance in their lives. It’s developing leaders in your organizations who foster and model healthy habits.

Wellness resorts are also upping their game from places to just relax and unwind to fully functioning facilities with medical staff on site who focus on the issues mentioned above. There are wellness resorts that focus specifically on weight management or addressing high blood pressure and diabetes through a medically-supervised diet and exercise regimen. There are others that diagnose and treat sleep disorders, developing a specialized plan to help you get the rest you need. Then there are resorts that help you connect with your spiritual side, offering workshops and lectures on meditation, mindfulness, and purposeful living. Most recently, I have been working with a resort that focuses not only on a healthy body but on a healthy mind, creating a scientifically-proven program that deals with intervention and prevention of neurological disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
No matter what you require to lead a healthier lifestyle, there is support to help get you there. You just need to set your intention and take the first step. It’s time to focus on the “conscious development of your whole self” per the words of Global Wellness Day’s founder. So, what are you waiting for?
Eat Well. Sleep Well. Travel Well.
Go get after it!
