Well, think again. As more and more wellness resorts enter the urban wellness space, you’ll see that you don’t have to go far to stay healthy. I traveled with my family to 1 Hotel South Beach, right on Collins Avenue in the heart of South Beach, for Spring Break this year. Although I’d spoken with the hotel management team in advance to get a good sense of the amenities and activities, I honestly wasn’t expecting much. After all, every hotel claims to have wellness offerings but most of the time it’s not much more than the spa and maybe a yoga class. To my surprise, I found 1 Hotel South Beach to be a great balance of indulgence and wellness (yes the two can coexist).

When most people think about wellness, they think about escaping to a secluded location, surrounded by nature or perhaps by a tranquil lake. You would never think of wellness in a trendy Miami neighborhood, bustling with shops and restaurants in the heartbeat of the city.

Have you ever been a tourist in your own hometown? It’s amazing how much we take our cities for granted. San Francisco is a world-class destination that people from around the globe come to see and yet for the Bay Area, it’s just The City. I was invited last week to a special session at the Cavallo Point Cooking School. I had heard the buzz but never had the chance to experience it for myself. I will admit, being domestically challenged, I was a bit intimidated by the array of fresh ingredients in the kitchen and the box of sharp knives on the counter, but it turned out to be a wonderful night out. Head Chef Tony Adams is not only incredibly talented but he’s a riot. He kept us in stitches by mentioning insights like how he got his “body by burrata” (I’m tempted to make this into a t-shirt) while sharing his culinary tips. Every year in August, I attend Virtuoso Travel Week. This global gathering brings together the best of the best travel advisors, tour operators, hoteliers, and tourism bureaus who are part of the exclusive Virtuoso Travel Network.
While it is an incredible opportunity to learn about updates within the industry and make connections, it is also an intense week of nonstop "being on" - through meetings, cocktail receptions, dinners, nighttime events, etc.- and the week is spent in constant close proximity to people from all parts of the world. Why do I tell you this? Because every year, as hard as I have tried to stay healthy during Travel Week by bringing throat lozenges, anti-bacterial gel, herbal teas and even a humidifier in my hotel room, I inevitably get sick the following week! Last year, I tried something different. I was invited to attend a post-conference trip to The Golden Door. I had heard so much about this iconic wellness resort near San Diego but never had the time to experience it for myself. This was the opportunity to check off a bucket list experience and build in some transition time before going home. |
