No shoes, no schedule. Just soaking it all in.

A Dream Trip, Finally Realized

Like many of my clients, visiting the Maldives—especially the iconic Soneva Jani—had been on my bucket list for years. I’d met the resort team at several travel industry events, and I was eager to finally experience their famous “no news, no shoes” philosophy myself.

This year, our family marked several milestones, and I knew I wanted to celebrate with a shared experience. Traveling with extended family, each with different interests and needs, meant finding a resort that could accommodate everyone while still feeling luxurious and easy. Soneva Jani fit the bill perfectly.

Detox & Weight LOSS at SHA Wellness Mexico

5/20/2024

I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I’ve done every fad diet -South Beach, Keto, No Carb, Low Fat, South Beach- you name it, I’ve done it. As I entered Menopause, my weight became more of an issue (along with myriad other symptoms) and my desperation to get my body back piqued. My kids even joked about the next milestone (birthday, graduation or family wedding) by which I would be “svelte”. I had set goals and expectations and ultimately failed to meet them every time. When I heard about Ozempic and saw the amazing photos of drastic weight loss, I was sure this was the panacea I was seeking.  Of course these diets, pills, patches and injections worked…temporarily…but as soon as I got off whatever the latest fad was and got back to life, the weight came back.

In an effort to get healthy in mind, body and spirit, I’ve been studying wellness for many years. I’ve been to Ayurvedic resorts in India, done temazcals with shamans in Mexico, climbed to the top of mountains in Sri Lanka, and explored many wellness resorts right here in the U.S as well. I’m keenly interested in how to live our healthiest (not only longest) lives. I’m also fascinated by modern medicine and the potential it holds for healing through genetic diagnosis and stem cell therapy. I keep abreast of the latest in wellness and also make sure I’m up to speed on what is happening in the wellness tourism industry.

I’d heard about SHA Spain for many years, and it had been on my list to visit, so you can imagine my eagerness when I learned that SHA Mexico would be opening in January 2024, much closer to my home in California. I had read about SHA’s integrative approach to health and I wanted to see it in practice.

1 Hotel South Beach: Wellness In Unlikely Places

When most people think about wellness, they think about escaping to a secluded location, surrounded by nature or perhaps by a tranquil lake. You would never think of wellness in a trendy Miami neighborhood, bustling with shops and restaurants in the heartbeat of the city.

Well, think again. As more and more wellness resorts enter the urban wellness space, you’ll see that you don’t have to go far to stay healthy. I traveled with my family to 1 Hotel South Beach, right on Collins Avenue in the heart of South Beach, for Spring Break this year. Although I’d spoken with the hotel management team in advance to get a good sense of the amenities and activities, I honestly wasn’t expecting much. After all, every hotel claims to have wellness offerings but most of the time it’s not much more than the spa and maybe a yoga class. To my surprise, I found 1 Hotel South Beach to be a great balance of indulgence and wellness (yes the two can coexist).

Summer Vacation planning & Some great promos

As we head into spring, I know many of us are still trying to think of ways to escape the unending rain that is battering the Bay Area. However, summer will be here before you know it and you don’t want to be left without any plans to take advantage of the glorious sunshine and long, lazy days.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been offering travel inspiration to help you select the best summer vacation for you and your family. We’ve discussed cruise options and wellness retreats, dude ranches and beach escapes. It ultimately comes down to what you envision as the ideal way to spend some much needed time off with those that mean the most to you.

Although summer may seem like it’s months away, there’s no better time than now to start planning. It’s not called peak travel season for nothing! With everyone looking for ways to head out and experience new adventures, the best hotels and airfares will be snatched up before you know it. That said, I would encourage you to reach out to me as soon as possible so you can also get your pick of resorts and room categories. I’ll be traveling myself, exploring wellness and active adventures in the Himalayas in Rishikesh, India from April 15-29 (follow along on Instagram or Facebook!). I would love to help you with your travel plans ideally before I leave, but of course I’ll be available in early May again for those of you who are compelled to act at the 11th hour (you know who you are!).

For those of you still deciding, here’s a little extra incentive:

Summer Camp for Adults: Japanese Zen in Southern California

Every year in August, I attend Virtuoso Travel Week. This global gathering brings together the best of the best travel advisors, tour operators, hoteliers, and tourism bureaus who are part of the exclusive Virtuoso Travel Network.

While it is an incredible opportunity to learn about updates within the industry and make connections, it is also an intense week of nonstop "being on" - through meetings, cocktail receptions, dinners, nighttime events, etc.- and the week is spent in constant close proximity to people from all parts of the world. Why do I tell you this? Because every year, as hard as I have tried to stay healthy during Travel Week by bringing throat lozenges, anti-bacterial gel, herbal teas and even a humidifier in my hotel room, I inevitably get sick the following week!

Last year, I tried something different. I was invited to attend a post-conference trip to The Golden Door. I had heard so much about this iconic wellness resort near San Diego but never had the time to experience it for myself. This was the opportunity to check off a bucket list experience and build in some transition time before going home.

Summer is right around the corner and many of you, like me, are looking at how to keep the kids engaged over the coming months. But why should kids have all the fun? There are plenty of opportunities for adults to enjoy outdoor activities, relax in the lake or by the ocean and enjoy time with family and friends.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll highlight some resorts and experiences that are ideal for summer travel. Whether you’re going with your significant other, taking the kids and extended family, or going with your favorite friends, there’s a resort that’s perfect for getting some vitamin D, vitamin sea or vitamin N (for nature)!
