Do you have Havana on your mind? Cuba is on many people’s bucket lists, including my own. I have visions of riding in convertible classic cars with the warm Caribbean sun caressing my face and the ocean breeze gliding through my hair. I imagine myself swaying to the beat of the Cuban drum as I learn to salsa with the locals in the town square.
This December, I’m going to turn these visions into reality! With the help of my travel partners in Cuba, I’ve curated a fantastic itinerary full of history, culture, arts and music. We’re going to meander through the cobblestone streets of Spanish Colonial Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, exploring markets and touring the Museum of Colonial Architecture.
We’ll bike through the Valley of Vinales, learning about the Afro-Cuban religion and the history of the slaves in the 19th Century. We’ll visit a tobacco farm to see how rural families live and work and stop at Clinica Las Terrazas to learn how medical services are handled. We’ll hike through “Del Mirador al Valle” (View of the Valley) to catch the changing color of the lush mountains at sunset.
We’ll browse the open air crafts markets in Old Havana, visit Ernest Hemingway’s Cuban home and cruise the Malecon, Havana’s waterfront, in classic convertible American cars, and enjoy so many more adventures!
Through it all, we’ll nosh on freshly prepared local fare at traditional paladares (enterprise restaurants), stop in for a daiquiri at El Floridita, the historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar that lays claim to the birthplace of this incredible libation, be treated to a rehearsal of the famous Habana Compas Dance Company and enjoy the sights and sounds of Havana’s music scene in the 40s, 50s and 60s at the iconic Buena Vista Social Club.
It’s a melding of cultural immersion and pure fun as we explore this island nation while it’s still in it’s authentic form-before the Hiltons and Starbucks invade and it becomes just another Caribbean island! I hope you’ll join me Dec 1-8, 2018 as we laugh, learn, dance and dine through the cities and countryside of Cuba.
