Summer is right around the corner and many of you, like me, are looking at how to keep the kids engaged over the coming months. But why should kids have all the fun? There are plenty of opportunities for adults to enjoy outdoor activities, relax in the lake or by the ocean and enjoy time with family and friends.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll highlight some resorts and experiences that are ideal for summer travel. Whether you’re going with your significant other, taking the kids and extended family, or going with your favorite friends, there’s a resort that’s perfect for getting some vitamin D, vitamin sea or vitamin N (for nature)!

A Dude Ranch Isn’t Just For Dudes
Resort at Paws Up in Montana is everything you would want in a traditional sleep-away camp. As a working cattle ranch set on 37,000 acres of pristine land, there’s an activity for everyone- many of which are included in the room rates. Horseback riding, ATV tours, white water rafting, fly fishing, go-carting, archery, mountain biking, boating, kayaking, swimming and hiking...just to name a few!
For our discerning palates, hot dogs and hamburgers just won’t do. Executive Chef Sunny Jin, of French Laundry and El Bulli fame, creates mouth-watering “rustic ranch cuisine” using the freshest ingredients from the resort grounds, complemented with wine and hand-crafted spirits. Do you have a sweet tooth? Paws Up has a s'moreologist - that's right, on-property expert s’more maker!
Depending on the size of your tribe, choose glamping from a variety of luxury tents or pick one of the many luxury homes. The safari-style tents sleep from 2-6 people, offer hardwood floors and fine linens with bathrooms that boast heated floors and rain showers. Each six-tent camp comes with a butler, a chef, and transportation to get you anywhere on the resort you’d like to go. For larger groups and families, select a home on the banks of the Blackfoot River or for a cozier, more-intimate experience, choose one of the smaller homes nestled in the forest with panoramic views of the rolling meadows and mountains.
Let’s not forget about Spa Town- a series of tents surrounded by the sounds of nature with heated massage tables and full baths & showers. Even the kids (5 and over with an adult) can get in on the spa action, with treatments formulated just for the younger set and for teens as well. There’s also a fitness center and an array of yoga classes to get your zen on.
Best of all, your rate includes 3 meals per person per day, specially selected wine, beer and well drinks with lunch and dinner, transfers from the Missoula International Airport and a host of included activities. You can also choose from guided excursions at a supplemental rate to create a more customized itinerary.

All-Inclusive Caribbean Fun
If you’re more interested in soaking up the rays on a Caribbean beach than on the back of a horse, BodyHoliday may be your ticket. Located on the island of St. Lucia, the tag line of this all-inclusive resort is “give us your body for a week and we’ll give you back your mind”...sounds pretty good, right? Providing a wide variety of options, the resort focuses on allowing you to make the vacation your own. You can enjoy a host of activities such as stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving, fitness classes, beach volleyball, cricket, tennis and golf. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, set up a hike to the Piton mountains, abseil a river gorge or bike the coastline.
Too much activity? Relax in the beachside hammock with your favorite book and cocktail in hand. As if that wasn't relaxing enough, you will receive daily (included) spa treatments at the Wellness Center - perched atop a hill with mesmerizing ocean views. The Ayurvedic Temple headed by Dr. Samantha provides a variety of treatments and cuisine along with a full consultation based on the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda. Yes, there’s also yoga, courses on mindfulness and specific programs focused on weight loss or cleanse and detox, if that’s your intention.
BodyHoliday also gives you options when it comes to meals. Grab a quick smoothies and salads at the beachside deli or enjoy gourmet meals at one of the five restaurants, featuring produce from the resort's organic garden. After dinner, dance the night away in the Clubhouse and treat yourself to the cocktails created by the in-house mixologists.
Throughout the year, BodyHoliday offers theme months that feature everything from dance (Jive June) to sailing (Spring Sail) to yoga (October Yoga). Many times, professional athletes and Olympic champions will lead programs on fitness and personal training. How about family beach fitness with Randy Moss or a week with Olympic swimmer Michael Jamieson to get the kids engaged? Although the resort is focused on guests 16 yrs and older, during Easter, the summer months, and the Christmas holidays, guests as young as 12 are welcomed for family fun (Well Fit Families). No companion? No problem! Throughout the year and especially during the solo-specific month (September Solos), BodyHoliday provides a communal table for travelers looking for company. A “BodyGuard” is your host and will escort the group to their table.
As of this year, BodyHoliday launched week-long retreats focused on a specific theme such as weight loss, yoga, or de-stress and mindfulness (Soul Sabbatical) and even a Vedic Retreat based on rebalance and rejuvenation through dosha-specific treatments, food and activities. In March, Maya Fiennes will be on site leading “A Journey Through The Chakras”. Other specialists will be featured as the program is further refined.
With so many options, it’s truly up to you on how you want to tailor your vacation!
