Every year in August, I attend Virtuoso Travel Week. This global gathering brings together the best of the best travel advisors, tour operators, hoteliers, and tourism bureaus who are part of the exclusive Virtuoso Travel Network.
While it is an incredible opportunity to learn about updates within the industry and make connections, it is also an intense week of nonstop "being on" - through meetings, cocktail receptions, dinners, nighttime events, etc.- and the week is spent in constant close proximity to people from all parts of the world. Why do I tell you this? Because every year, as hard as I have tried to stay healthy during Travel Week by bringing throat lozenges, anti-bacterial gel, herbal teas and even a humidifier in my hotel room, I inevitably get sick the following week!
Last year, I tried something different. I was invited to attend a post-conference trip to The Golden Door. I had heard so much about this iconic wellness resort near San Diego but never had the time to experience it for myself. This was the opportunity to check off a bucket list experience and build in some transition time before going home.

The Golden Door is located in San Marcos, about 45 min from the San Diego International Airport or 20 min from the small McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad. Simply put, it is easy to get to, but a world away! As a matter of fact, you could easily miss the entrance if you weren’t specifically looking for it, which is why it’s a favorite of celebrities and executives alike.
But once the golden doors (yes the entrance to the resort are actual golden doors) open, you are transported to a Japanese paradise, situated on 600 acres of natural woods, mountains and open space. You are surrounded by gardens, koi ponds, flowing water, orange groves, stone lanterns and nature's beauty. The intimate all-inclusive resort features just 40 rooms designed in the style of a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn.

At its core, the resort focuses on feeling the earth beneath your feet, getting off the fast track, and dedicating time to YOU. For me, it was the perfect prescription after a long week of Vegas madness! My favorite aspect is the slow pace, the calming energy and the opportunity to lay low.
When it comes to activities at The Golden Door, there is plenty to do, but there is also the opportunity to do nothing. There are a multitude of courses to choose from, including fencing, archery and fitness classes, and your stay includes sessions with a personal trainer and even daily spa treatments (my in-room massage was heavenly and the perfect way to ease into my stay).
With 32 miles of hiking trails on the property, you have 11 hikes to choose from - ensuring something for every fitness level. I opted for the guided Labyrinth walk which ends at the gratitude labyrinth by a lake. Each person takes a rock from the fabric bag before walking the labyrinth, and it’s said that you don’t choose the rock, but the rock chooses you. The rock I chose was 'Nurture' - exactly what I needed at that moment! It’s what I was missing the most at that time, the ability to nurture myself and allow some space for self-care.
They also make your stay so easy and stress-free! You can literally show up with your sneakers and your toothbrush and everything else will be provided. In your room, you will find 2 pairs of basic workout wear (light blue t-shirt, navy knit shorts with matching sweatshirt and sweatpants) and a freshly-pressed kimono, which all guests wear to dinner. There is no need to make any decisions-what to wear, what not to wear, or what to bring … your room is fully stocked with organic toiletries formulated specifically for The Golden Door. Everything is laundered and replenished daily. It was liberating to make my schedule exactly as I wished, which for me included yoga, zumba class, hiking and some fabulous spa treatments. I wore my workout wear all day and changed into my kimono after I showered before dinner-no make up, no hair products, no stress.
There are opportunities for reflection and little life lessons throughout the resort, whether it’s the koi pond which teaches you to focus on the now (not worry about what lies beyond in the mountains), or the Torii gates on the property which remind you to leave what doesn’t serve you behind as you walk through them.
When it comes to food, everyone eats at the same time at communal tables which not only ensures you will never eat alone but also provides a chance to share experiences with your fellow guests. Moreover, Chef Greg Frey Jr.'s passion for crafting delicious cuisine from the resort’s organic garden comes through with each delicious bite.
Although a full week is recommended to engage in everything the resort has to offer, there are specific times when 4 or 5 day retreats are available. There are also certain weeks with a women-only, men-only, or co-ed focus and when special guests or presenters are onsite to enhance your experience. Although fitness may be the focus during the day, the evening programs can include more soulful options such as Sound Journey or Full Moon Circle. There is also Japanese acupuncture, cooking class, or Yoga For Sleep. Weekly schedules are available in advance and the Guest Services Team works with you to create a program that is customized to your fitness level and your dietary needs.
I had some incredible experiences during my stay, but what I brought home was a complete sense of calm and a readiness to be fully engaged and present for my family and my work.
